Driving culture


The project is divided into two sections; one is "Street Culture" where other students reflect on the main reason of wrong driving behavior. The second is a short movie on the way a family raises a child and how it can affect their decision making.

The ideas

We are a team of six 10th grade students from Mehr-e-Taban International School. When we became familiar with the Your Ideas Your Initiatives project, we found it related very closely to the current issues in our society. So, we decided to start as a team and work on the reasons for accidents.
The first time this contest was introduced to students in this class they took it really seriously, thinking how it is one of the current issues in our community. The topic was introduced through booklets and a PowerPoint offered on the Your Ideas Your Initiatives website. We displayed many photos and students discussed what they understood from the pictures. This helped them get more involved with different aspects of the topic. We discussed the effects of safe mobility and safe roads on urbanization. We also were able to engage with the service and action course. The students were interested in making a video clip and inform the school community to be aware of the possible dangers of driving errors. They believe mobility is a subject to be considered, especially for youth. They are teenagers and think it is essential to learn how to drive safely and take the responsibility for making correct decisions from an early age. During the first steps of the planning time, they decided to make a video clip and act in it themselves, but they had problems with some scenes of the clip. Again they brainstormed and decided to make puppets and use them in the clip. They started searching the internet for ways to interact with the community, but they believed since we already have different age groups at our school, it would be better to limit the research to the school community. They would build a sample street and ask other student to give their reflections, which would be considered for the short movie. The other research source used was Google images for making the puppets to be used in the movie.

The initiatives

The first step we took was to design a model of a sample city and have a “Street Culture Day”. The school art teacher, service and action coordinator and CAS coordinator helped us to improve our ideas. All we needed was to figure out how our school community thinks about true pedestrian and driving culture and this would help us choose a topic for our clip. We designed many boxes, using recycled materials to make the buildings, hospitals, banks, apartments, etcetera. We also designed pedestrians and vehicles. What we asked other students from PYP to MYP to do was to talk about the culture of walking or driving on the streets. Their reflections were given orally and we listened to what they said. Later, students also attached some sticky notes to our photos on the boards. That was a great help!
The next step was to find out the most significant reason mentioned on Street Culture Day. Most students and teachers believed the culture comes from family and personal decisions. They believed that many factors, like friends or education, can affect the correctness of our decisions. All in all, risky behaviors need to be reduced.
After meetings and discussions, we planned to make a video clip about how a person can decide right from wrong and change their own and another’s future. For writing the scenario, we got help from our service and action coordinator and made the story of a family. The story shows how a child grows, and when the parents give him a car they are happy about their decision. But the next step is his responsibility. When a friend tries to persuade him to speed, he can choose to listen or not. If he listens to the friend’s words, the results can be catastrophic. On the other hand, being wise and not being influenced by others’ words can save his life and maybe many other lives. We believe this power to make decisions at difficult times can be learned from childhood. It is the responsibility of parents, schools and community.
We really enjoyed the teamwork and participation of the school community. We shared our ideas and changed our minds many times. This helped us a lot to get on the right path.
The message we hope to transmit is the importance of early training, from the very first years of childhood, to take responsibility for our thoughts, decisions and actions. We believe our addressee will be parents and educators, and perhaps the media.
As the tenth graders of a school which has been experiencing the first year of being in the IB program and also participating in the important IB e-assessment, we were short of time. By the way, we will improve this clip and make a gift of it to our school and to our city police. We also communicated our message over the school radio. Our clip can be presented to the parents of our school, specially the PYP parents.
