Everyday many people are involved in road accidents. Some are killed. Many more are injured or maimed. So it is important for us to learn how to use the roads properly and safely. Hence, road safety education plays an important role .

The ideas

Safety on roads for pedestrians as well as for drivers is an important aspect in today's life. In todays world road and transport have become an integral part of every human being's life. Every body is a road user in one shape or another. To reduce the number of traffic deaths and injuries, a holistic framework such as the safe system approach needs to be adopted to ensure safety for all road users. Everyone needs to be well aware of the road traffic rules especially children and young people who are at significant road accidents risks. Hence, road safety education plays an important role in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of children and young people - ensuring they become responsible drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.

We have a school road safety club which does many activities to create awareness. We aim to make our students aware about all aspects of responsible road behaviour.

The initiatives

In our school we have been organising workshops on responsible road behaviour regularly. A Puppet show, a knowledge learning session and a Nukkad Natak was organised for the students by PVR Nest to teach them about the importance of safety on the roads. Our students also got the opportunity to attend the 5 days road safety awareness summer camp at Traffic training park, Baba Kharak Singh Marg.

Our school has been selected for the first film making power packed session with Mr. Nagesh KuKunoor eminent film director out of 160 school participants to generate awareness on responsible road behaviour and the film will be further screened at the selected PVRs.

A PSA ( Parents and staff Association) was held at SD public school to encourage the parents and teachers participation in road safety management of school children. DR. Rohit Baluja President (IRTE - Institute of Road Traffic Education ) was the speaker in the event. It was an interactive session where teachers and parents gave their valuable suggestions for the children’s safety.

Students are also sensitised by making them play games like snakes and ladders specially customised on road safety. They learn the rules in a play way method.
