They say a picture speaks a thousand words… so the students at the Secondary School for Health № 138 decided to use them to communicate about road safety!

The ideas

There are many different aspects of road safety: crossing the street, wearing seat belts, not drinking and driving, and respecting the speed limits - to name just a few! The students and Russia’s Secondary School for Health № 138 didn’t want to limit themselves to just one.

The students recognised that communication and education has an essential role to play in road safety, and they wanted to develop an idea that would let creativity flow freely and let the students share the messages that they feel strongest about. They decided that the best way to do this would be a poster contest!

The initiatives

For the second year in a row, they have organised a drawing contest called "We Draw the Street". The call for entries was opened to students aged 8 to 16 years old. The drawings were as diverse as the topics they covered: some were funny, some sad, some cute, and some frightening; and they all came accompanied with slogans that were also created by the students.

The entries were viewed by the entire school, as well as parents, friends, relatives and community members. The images and slogans initiated many discussions both inside and outside of the school about road safety and responsible behaviour.
